Through the McDonnell International Scholars Academy’s strategic alliances, WashU is connected to more than 30 premier universities globally. These longstanding relationships are strategically important to both graduate student recruitment and faculty-level research activities.

The McDonnell Academy supports approximately 100 Scholars from around the world and from different disciplines to pursue graduate and professional degrees at WashU. Candidates from partner institutions are given priority for admission to the fellowship. The Academy’s core mission is to recruit and mentor these talented Scholars to prepare them to become future global leaders.

In addition, this strategic partnership network is a platform for academic collaboration and exchange. Through seed grants, international symposia and workshops, the McDonnell Academy serves as a convener, incubator, and catalyst of substantive research activities among partner institutions.

Partner institutions

Universities that become partners in the McDonnell Academy are committed to excellence in education and research, and to the importance of international collaboration. They also provide a base for broader WashU connections to their host country or region, aligned with our global strategy. Some of the factors the McDonnell Academy considers in selecting new partners and retaining existing partners are:

  • recruitment opportunities
  • faculty interests in research ties and/or educational exchange through multiple programs
  • school-level and university-wide strategic priorities
  • strong faculty champions on both sides
  • alignment with regional strategy
  • long-term ability to sustain bi-directional, mutually beneficial ties
