Starting August 1, 2021, faculty, staff, and graduate/professional students (on an individual basis) may resume university-sponsored and supported international travel in accordance with the university’s standard international travel policy.

International travel for these groups no longer needs to be considered essential nor is a petition required for all international travel. All university-sponsored and supported international travel must be registered in MyTrips prior to departure. The International Travel Oversight Committee (ITOC) strongly encourages travelers to register their itineraries as early as possible. Early registration allows the Global Travel Safety Office to provide pre-trip support in case of any significant change in conditions.

Travel suspension conditions will remain in place for areas that have higher-risk conditions. The Infectious Disease team in collaboration with the ITOC Executive Body will designate travel suspension conditions due to COVID-19 or the impacts of COVID-19. Faculty, staff, and graduate/professional students who wish to pursue travel to a country under a travel suspension condition may submit a petition for exception. Travel suspension conditions will be updated on a bi-weekly basis and posted on the Travel Suspension Conditions page.

Spring 2022 study abroad programs will operate as long as local conditions allow. The ITOC, in collaboration with the study abroad offices and Infectious Disease Division, conducted thorough reviews of offered programs to select programs with robust plans and resources to support students through their time abroad.

Student group international travel will be permitted on a limited basis. All student group international travel for the Spring 2022 semester must be approved by the appropriate dean’s office as critical to their school’s academic mission and submit a Safety Plan for Group Travel to be approved by the ITOC Executive Body. Completed Safety Plans must be submitted for review to itoc@wustl.edu with a signed Spring 2022 Safety Plan for Group Travel Addendum. The ITOC Executive Body will not review a trip’s Safety Plan without a signature from the dean’s designee. Approval from the dean’s office does not serve as approval for the trip. The trip’s purpose must be approved by the dean’s office and the ITOC Executive Body must approve the trip’s Safety Plan. Links to both documents are posted below.

The ITOC recognizes that returning to international travel now requires additional planning and preparation. Travelers are responsible for understanding and navigating the entry requirements for their itinerary. For helpful resources and guidance visit the Return to Travel Resources page.

All travel is subject to changes in travel conditions and public health guidance. This policy update does not override any school or department-level restrictions on travel.
