McDonnell Scholars Brave the Cold for Community Service

Gateway Greening Initiative

McDonnell Academy Scholars, Ambassadors Hayrettin Yucesoy and Ohad Kadan, and family members completed the mulching of garden beds on Saturday, March 31, as part of a community service initiative sponsored by the McDonnell Scholars Engagement Committee (SEC). The cold and rainy weather did not disrupt the flurry of wheelbarrows and shovels, as the group worked diligently to complete the tasks needed for the garden.

Working with Gateway Greening, an organization which educates and empowers people to strengthen their communities through gardening and urban agriculture, the SEC helped to facilitate and recruit Scholars, Ambassadors, and guests as volunteers for this community engagement initiative. The group celebrated the end of their four-hour accomplishment with lunch under one of the garden pavilions.
